Ep. 14 - THE PAST IS OVER. Does the Past control our lives?

Updated: Feb 19

Group Discussion on "IS PAST BEHAVIOR AN INDICATION OF FUTURE BEHAVIOR?"

THE PAST IS OVER

  • Present day Psychology, as a field, is based on understanding and helping people via their past experiences and current situation. The 3 Principles state that we are always healthy, no matter what past experiences and current situation are

  • Dangers of keeping the past alive by regurgitating it, night after night, in support groups

  • Taking people in the past is getting in the way of them realizing that they could be happy NOW, no matter what the past was

  • Analyzing the details of people's lives, whether past or present, was not the key to helping them get healthier

  • We live in a world of Thought. The past is just a thought.

Sydney Banks from his book called "The Missing Link"

We must rid ourselves of yesterday's negative thoughts

to receive today's new and positive feelings.

I do not ask anyone to ignore their past experiences.

This would be denial, and denial is not a healthy state.

Instead, seek a clearer understanding of the past;

realize that the negative feelings and emotions

from past traumatic experiences are no longer true.

They are merely memories, a collection of old, stale thoughts.
